A bird rehabilitation and rehoming center based in Sherwood Park, Alberta, Meika’s Safehouse provides a safe and loving environment for birds in need. We work primarily with parrots, but all species of companion or pet birds are welcomed
When birds are surrendered into our care, we fully assess the their overall health and start some training as appropriate. Most of the birds have not been abused, but because of the level of intelligence they possess, they are often under significant emotional stress when they are relinquished. Birds that have been mistreated emotionally or physically require more rehabilitation and may never be suitable for rehoming.
When we determine a bird is ready to be rehomed, much care and consideration is put into selecting an appropriate family. When we are able to match a bird with a new family, in most cases, he or she will be adopted out with a cage suitable, as well as the toys and favorite items the bird has grown accustomed to. We also provide a current health certificate and microchip most birds before they leave our care.
Our desire is to see the birds that leave our care to succeed in their new home, and we are always here to provide advice and assistance.

Phoenix could be described as a text book conure...sweet, cuddly, cute..with the noisy nippy side as a counter balance. She does step up when she feels comfortable with you...you do need to show confidence with her though, if you are shy to have her step up and you pull away from her, she will instantly lose trust in you and bite if you try again. She does step up on a dowel for easy moving when she's "in a mood". To meet her you will have to go to Harvest Pointe Veterinary Hospital as she is being fostered there for the time being.
SPECIES: Moluccan Cockatoo
AGE: Hatched in 1998
ADOPTION FEE: $2000 with cage, vet check, additional health testing, and microchip.
I am a transfer from the Lethbridge Parrot Club. My guardian passed away and I was in need of a stable environment where i get to choose my next family. I am very friendly with most people, i love to cuddle, talk, scream, dance and chew cardboard toys to shreds! I am social and love to be with people that understand the complex needs of the cockatoo.
SPECIES: Congo African Grey
SEX: Suspected female
Just landed. not available to adopt yet.
Strong plucking habit.
AGE: Hatched 2016
ADOPTION FEE: $900 with cage vet check and microchip
I prefer women and tolerate most men. I do not like to be pet, and please don’t stick your fingers in my cage.
I step up when I feel like it and I prefer to stand on your arm rather than your hand or shoulder. When you ask me to step up, please use your arm rather than your hand or finger. I do step up on a dowel perch for easy moving if I am not feeling like stepping up.
I give good kisses and can play a wicked game of peek a boo. My voice is adorable but if noise is deal breaker, I won’t be the right fit for you as I can be loud at times.
I would be best suited in a home without young children or other pets such as cats or dogs.
SPECIES: YELLOW CROWNED AMAZON
AGE: UNKNOWN SUSPECTED HATCH YEAR 2010
ADOPTION FEE: $1500 W/CAGE VET CHECK AND MICROCHIP
Very talkative, steps up on her own terms, stays put on a stand. Not suitable for a home with children. If she has his mindset that she doesn't like you, she will fly to attack. This bird will have to choose you to be a good match.
There was very little information about her when we went to pick her up. We are unsure of her age, we were told her hatch-year was 2010, but cannot guarantee this, we were also told her name was Lulu, but she says "Step up Pickle, Hi Pickle" so we believe her name is Pickle.
"Up up up up up up up up, Good boy, Be a good Boy, Hi Pretty Girl, Hello" - Does swear.
SPECIES: Congo African Grey
SEX: Suspected male
SPECIES: Blue Fronted Amazon
AGE: Hatched 1992
SEX: Unknown, suspected male

Lou is a really sweet amazon who loves to talk, sing, whistle and laugh. He has a gentle demeanor and really likes being part of the action, and sometimes he must be the center of attention in his world. His feather condition isn't the greatest right now, but we feel like after a good molt with a good diet that he will be all shiny and green again. He gets adopted with his cage, vet check and microchip.
SPECIES: White Face cockatiel
ADOPTION FEE: $75/ each
Peter is not tame at all, and will stand his ground when you try and have him step up. He had a respiratory infection upon surrender and was treated with antibiotics. We are trying to get him to eat a healthier diet and he's starting but still does loves his seed.
Photo coming soon.

These two were paired up in the place where they came from. They were from an estate we took in a bunch of birds from summer 2017. The female is a mixture of a yellow and blue Indian ringneck, and the grey is a solid grey.
They are wild birds who were set to be bred in their previous home. We do not know if they ever had babies in the past.

This sweetie came into care with some localized plucking on her lower belly, legs and base of the tail. She had some extra testing at the vet and we are trying with some nerve blocking meds to see if this helps ease the tendency to pluck. She is so very lovely and gentle, and would do well in a home with older children (14 years and older)
SPECIES: INDIAN RINGNECK
AGE: HATCH YEAR 2013
ADOPTION FEE: $650 W/CAGE VET CHECK AND MICROCHIP
Tango is a nervous girl who plucks her feathers and has for many many years (since before we've met her). She doesn't talk but will step up and settle in a calm environment. She requires a soft-spoken, quiet home and would do better without any dogs or cats. She does get along with some other birds. She has a high pitched call that she makes when she wants to know where you are or if she's scared. Not suitable for apartment living. (updated picture...she's almost fully feathered!)
ADOPTION FEE: $75
This little turkey is a rocket of energy, she loves to be out but doesn't like being handled. She steps up on a stick from almost anywhere she gets herself into. She gets along by herself but we also suspect she would get along with another lovebird (preferably male).
